Celebrating LP Members’ Reelections!Â
Election Day brought exciting wins across our network! Dorcey Applyrs made history as the first Black woman EVER elected as Mayor in Albany. In Meadville, PA, Jamie Kinder was reelected as mayor, demonstrating that her work to champion a climate action plan, free municipal ambulances, and stronger tenant protections is firmly in line with her community’s priorities. Additionally, LP board members Gabriela Santiago-Romero (Detroit City Council), Stephanie Morales, (Portsmouth Commonwealth Attorney), Elliott Payne, (Minneapolis City Council), Yterenickia Bell, (Clarkston City Council), and Tiffany Caban (New York City Councilmember) were all reelected! Check out even more amazing members who were reelected.
Our Last #LocalStory of the Year
Across our nearly 1,500 members, there’s a unique story for every local official about what brought them into local government. Some have had a passion for service since a young age, while others were called by their community to serve in a moment of crisis. Today, we’re proud to share just a snippet of these #LocalStories and what has brought our exceptional members into Local Progress. Watch and share the video on social media with our Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Bluesky links.Â
🤝 Connecting with Community at the SOMOS Conference
Early this month, Local Progress and the Local Progress Impact Lab attended the 2025 SOMOS Conference in Puerto Rico, where we connected with members, partners, and allies from across New York State. This year, in partnership with Liga de Ciudades de Puerto Rico and PolicyLink, LP hosted a Service Day site visit in RĂo Piedras, a vibrant community undergoing economic and housing development to ensure long-term stability and growth. We also co-hosted a reception with our partners, Make the Road New York Action, CUFFH Action, Citizen Action of New York, and PolicyLink, where we celebrated Mayor Dorcey Applyrs’ leadership, her time on the LP Board, and her historic election as the first Black woman Mayor of Albany. We’re excited to continue exploring opportunities to expand our work in Puerto Rico and plan for what’s ahead next year!

❤️ LP Black Caucus: “We Keep Us Safe”Â
Across the various cities that President Trump has called in the National Guard, it’s no coincidence that nearly all of them are led by a Black Mayor. As immigrants are disappeared and our communities are brutalized, members of the Local Progress Black Caucus Leadership Committee came to gather to push back against these racist attacks from the federal government, talk about the impact they’ve seen in their cities, and call for the need to continue organizing and resisting. In their video, Black Caucus leadership members make it clear that it’s our Black local officials in the frontlines against this authoritarianism, working with community to ensure we’re all safe in these dangerous times.Â

🏠From Price Fixing to Rent Stabilization, Local Leaders are Protecting Renters
Portland, OR became the twelfth locality to ban algorithmic rental price fixing this month, passed by our incredible member Councilor Angelita Morillo! Fighting rent price-fixing is a concrete step that all local officials can take to ensure less money leaves the hands of working-class residents to enrich wealthy landlords. You too can join the growing number of localities taking action against corporate greed by learning more about the Algorithmic Rental Price Fixing Campaign. Across the country in New York, local lawmakers and LP members, Syracuse City Auditor Alex Marion and Kingston Alderwoman Michele Hirsch, testified at a state legislative hearing about the legal issues facing upstate cities that have tried to opt in to rent stabilization.Â

🛡️Localities Stand Strong to Protect Immigrant Communities
As our friends, neighbors, and colleagues are ripped apart from their families by masked secret police, local leaders across the country are standing up to this continued injustice. In Providence, RI, the City Council tightened rules to limit police cooperation with ICE. After a caravan of federal agents kidnapped Chicagoans, Little Village community members and elected officials gathered in support and solidarity. In Minnesota, LPMN members are standing up for their Southeast Asian neighbors and in Maine, a coalition of immigrant justice advocates launched an ICE hotline to document enforcement operations. “We will use every lawful, peaceful tool to protect our neighbors, including rapid response networks, hotlines, legal support, public advocacy and our collective action,” said City Councilor Pious Ali.Â
