Federal Response
Local governments must be ready to respond to federal funding cuts and other actions that endanger their communities.

100 Days of Trump

As we approach the 100 day mark of the second Trump Administration, it is time to take stock of what this administration has prioritized. An indiscriminate effort to detain and deport our neighbors with blatant disregard for fundamental rights and due process. A dangerous mass dismissal of federal workers who take care of our children, maintain our public spaces, protect the public health, and much more. Proposed cuts to Medicaid, Social Security, and other essential services so that they can further enrich billionaires and big corporations. The list goes on. One hundred days in, it is evident just how drastically the Trump Administration plans to hollow out the public good and scapegoat communities so they can enrich themselves and their billionaire backers.

NOW IS THE TIME TO SPEAK UP AND FIGHT TO PUT FAMILIES OVER BILLIONAIRES. NOW IS THE TIME TO SPEAK UP FOR OUR VALUES AND RESIST THE EROSION OF OUR FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS.

All Local Progress members have an important role to play. From educating local communities about their rights to activating your constituents into local organizing efforts to advocating against federal funding cuts, there are potential action steps for all elected leaders in this moment.

Below you will find a number of options for how to take action. Consider what course of action is appropriate for your jurisdiction and your authority. You can count on Local Progress to help you along the way. We are in this together.

📣 Take Action

1) Host an In-Person Event to Mobilize Your Constituents into Strategic Action🤝

This can be tailored to a specific issue that you are concerned about or framed more broadly as an information sharing session. Many local elected officials are organizing town halls with their state elected peers or Members of Congress. Others are hosting “Know Your Rights” workshops with local organizations or participating in national days of action. One of the most important things that local leaders can do right now is engage people who are alarmed by what the federal administration is doing and move them into strategic action.

Use this guide on how to think about hosting an event to engage constituents on the policies of the Trump Administration.

2) Join the Fight Against the Reconciliation Billionaire Giveaway 🥊

The Trump Administration and its billionaire allies are planning to use the annual budget reconciliation process to cut taxes for the rich at the expense of Medicaid, food assistance, and other essential programs. Local elected officials can play an important role in stopping them. By speaking out, you can help turn the tide against this destructive plan.

Speak out using our Families Over Billionaires digital toolkit.

3) Advance Resolutions and Policies That Prepare Your Jurisdiction to Protect Its People 📝

Whether you are in a school district, city, county, or other local jurisdiction, there are ways your government body can use its authority to support residents being harmed by the Trump Administration. You can help insulate your locality from weaponized federal funding cuts, direct government counsel to explore litigation options, direct your body’s lobbyists to push back against federal budget cuts, and take a number of other actions.

Adapt and advance this template resolution for cities and counties that includes five directives that leverage the powers of local government to most effectively resist the Trump Administration’s assault on working people, especially communities that have been the target of this federal administration.

Fighting for Our Communities Under Trump

The actions the Trump Administration has taken in its first few days come from a place of utter cruelty, racism, and greed. These executive actions are intended to shock and awe – but we are resisting and we will govern for all our people.
