In a betrayal of working people across the country, Congress has passed the Trump Administration’s Billionaire Tax Scam and sent it to the President’s desk.
In response to this devastating bill, we’re calling on our membership to join our call on Thursday, July 31 at 12PM PT / 2 PM CT / 3PM ET to learn about the Billionaire Tax Scam’s expected impacts on our communities and how we can respond.
What the Budget Bill Does
This law is an unprecedented tax giveaway to wealthy individuals and corporations paid for by trillions in deep cuts to vital public programs and trillions more in unsustainable debt that will make life harder and costlier for our families, neighbors, and communities. Among other things, the bill will:
- Cut nearly $1 trillion from Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act, and Medicare. Additionally, it imposes punitive administrative requirements that will kick 12 million people off their health insurance and put hundreds of nursing homes and rural hospitals at high risk of closure.
- Cut SNAP to strip food benefits from 11 million people and increase hunger and shift hundreds of millions of dollars in SNAP costs onto states.
- Phase out clean energy tax credits by 2027 which will cause household energy spending to increase by up to $415 per year and make us more reliant on harmful fossil fuels.
- Create a nationwide private school voucher program with unlimited public funding that will take desperately needed funds from our public schools to support private schools.
- Increase funding for immigration detention by 308% and hire 10,000 additional ICE officers to expand the Trump Administration’s terror campaign against our communities.
- Increase the federal deficit by $3.5 trillion over the next 10 years, harming our economy and raising the cost of municipal debt financing.

How We Can Respond
The Billionaire Tax Scam will cause serious harm – creating massive fiscal challenges for state and local budgets while raising costs for basic necessities, from food to healthcare to energy.
In the short-term, we need to educate ourselves on this bill and ensure blame for its destructive effects falls on those responsible for it. It is up to local leaders like you to tell your community that the Trump Administration and its billionaire allies have betrayed working people across the country. We must track the devastating impacts of this bill closely, and ensure everyone knows who is causing the harm.
In the long-term, to protect our communities and stand up to this billionaire giveaway, local leaders will need to prevail on state governments to fill budget gaps and pursue creative, progressive revenue options at the local level.
