📎 Federal Resource Round-Up – Urgent Billionaire Tax Scam Update

The Senate has started voting on the Trump Administration’s Billionaire Tax Scam and Congress is racing to pass it by July 4. This bill would make the largest cuts to healthcare and food assistance in U.S. history—all to fund tax cuts for the ultrawealthy.

But vote margins are thin, key Senators remain divided, and the bill has faced major procedural roadblocks. By raising our voices and engaging our communities, we have a critical opportunity to weaken—or even defeat—this devastating legislation.

Our goal for these round-ups is to help you connect with key, timely information and resources from Local Progress and partners—and to help you focus on where local power can be effectively leveraged in this moment.

📣 TAKE ACTION NOW: Put Families Over Billionaires

The House’s megabill would strip health coverage from 15 million people, strip SNAP food benefits from 14 million Americans (including 4 million children), raise child poverty by denying 4.5 million children the Child Tax Credit, and fuel energy rate increases and climate change by rolling back clean energy tax credits.

In several ways, the Senate’s version is even worse than the version that passed the House in May. Before the Senate parliamentarian ruled against some provisions, the bill was expected to:

  • Impose harsher Medicaid work requirements than the House version, kicking an additional 100,000–400,000 people off their insurance.
  • Shift even more costs to states, forcing deep cuts to Medicaid and other critical programs.
  • Increase out-of-pocket costs for emergency care.
  • Add a new tax on solar and wind projects, wiping out clean energy industries and driving up energy costs.

‼️ Local Action to Protect Birthright Citizenship After Trump v. CASA, Inc.

This past Friday, the Supreme Court stayed nationwide injunctions that had blocked Trump’s Executive Order denying birthright citizenship to children born to immigrants without permanent legal status. Importantly, the Supreme Court did not rule on the legality of the executive order or birthright citizenship. For now, birthright citizenship remains in effect: children born in the U.S. are citizens, regardless of their parents’ immigration status. Unless federal courts stop the executive order from going into effect as part of new or ongoing litigation, the executive order will go into effect 30 days after the Supreme Court decision—on July 27, 2025. Local leaders can take action by (1) ensuring that all residents in their communities have access to all government-issued documents (like birth certificates) to which they are entitled; (2) are not unnecessarily collecting or requiring proof of citizenship to access services and programs; and (3) working with local immigrant legal services providers to publish Know Your Rights materials about access to documentation like birth certificates and passports.
