In response to the politically motivated assassination of Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman, Local Progress released the following statement from the Local Progress Minnesota Organizing Committee:
“Our communities in Minnesota are reeling from the horrific news of the targeted political assassination of former Speaker of the House Melissa Hortman, her husband Mark, and the attempt on the lives of Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette.
Our role as elected officials is to bring our communities together, to do the work of collaborative governance that delivers justice for our constituents no matter our race, age or where we live. This work requires commitment, courage, and moral clarity, especially in times of great fear and uncertainty. Melissa Hortman lived into this commitment for the people of Minnesota.
Political violence brings huge waves of fear to all of us. That is the intention, that we second-guess our commitment to stand up for our communities. But we know we are strongest and safest together. We stand firm in our commitment to serve our communities and democracy.
We remember Melissa for her diligence and commitment to all Minnesotans. Our hearts are with her family and community.”
