In response to the Trump Administration’s unlawful, sweeping order banning travel from 12 countries and severely restricting travel from seven others, Local Progress released the following statement:
“As local elected officials representing communities for whom immigrants are our friends, loved ones, and neighbors – we are devastated, afraid, and furious. The Trump Administration’s recent travel ban is an unlawful, racist, Islamophobic, and xenophobic policy that will rip families apart and put our communities in grave danger.
Let’s be clear: The Trump Administration is purposefully villainizing our immigrant communities – sowing fear and creating chaos – all to distract from their own leadership failures and to pad their own pockets. Just like the first Muslim Ban, this administration is exacerbating divisions in our country through this ban under the guise of safety. But we know that what actually keeps us safe – like healthcare, housing, and education – are precisely the services that the Trump administration is actively trying to take away from millions of working people to give tax breaks to billionaires.
We continue to fight. We refuse to let the Trump Administration and their billionaire allies criminalize and isolate our immigrant neighbors. We will continue to fight for a society that ensures all working families – no matter where they are from – have a roof over their heads, high-quality healthcare, and life-sustaining jobs.”
