On January 30th, Local Progress organized over 70 local school board members from 15 states to submit a letter to the US Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions against the nomination of Betsy DeVos for Secretary of Education. In the months since then President-elect Donald Trump announced DeVos’ nomination, countless organizations and individuals mobilized to urge Senators to vote against her. During the four weeks before her confirmation, educators, parents and allies sent over 1 million letters and made 80,000 phone calls using the National Education Association’s site alone. This helped hit a historical record for the most phone calls Congress has ever received. While she was confirmed, by joining in the resistance, Local Progress members have created a base to protect our schools in the coming years that DeVos will hold office.
